Paheli???

PAHELI didn’t get the nomination for Oscars…and all sort of articles are flowing around about why it didn’t figure in the final five…just read an article on Rediff…(click on the title to read it)

I don’t know why we care soooooo much for the Oscar nomination… and I have a few arguments to support my statement…I had heard a lot of stories earlier and the article confirmed many of those…point no. 1- why do the producers and directors have to market their film to the jury…why are they asked to request the jury members to watch their movies…I mean if I make a movie with a low budget and then if I have to spend ten times more just to get the jury to watch it, doesn’t make any sense to me…does it?...point no.2- if Lagaan made it to the final five simply because of the presence of the British actors in the film and their influence on the jury (notwithstanding its awesome script and mellifluous direction), then there can’t be more foolish people than us…
point no. 3- why do we want an award from an academy which has no recognition for our culture and values… to them the songs in our movies seem absurd and our actors no more than clowns…but still an Oscar is what every Indian wishes for…as if it’ll make India a superpower or will give us an edge over any nation…what does that imply…I won’t say anything…it’s for us to understand…would they do the same if Filmfare started a category for Foreign Language Film…huh?...that’s all my lord…with that I rest my case…

How paheli was chosen with a movie like black around itself is a paheli. As for the oscars, there too there is hectic lobbying and it is more commerce than art. Besides, as you said they wont understand their song and dance. For them, we are like the polar bear in Africa. Why bother

hmm, point to be noted me lord...even i think that there is too much gung ho about getting an oscar. by giving oscars so much prominence, we automatically put US on a higher pedestal than us. if they consider our movies substandard, then someone should point out to them that they also make masala flicks like Terminator and we also have our shares of serious cinema like Shwas. anyways, no indian movie getting nominated there is nothing but a manifestation of their racial prejudice-not that we care...
